GETTING RID OF YOUR PELVIC PAIN WITH LAPAROSCOPY

Pelvic pain in women can be traced to many diverse sources. One solution that your doctor can use to address and relieve pelvic discomfort, whether you’re suffering from one or multiple conditions, is minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery.

Dr. Pamela Kimbrough and her caring, competent team at Life’s Cycle help you through your laparoscopic procedure and make sure that your recovery is complete, freeing you from the pelvic pain you suffered with before. This is just one of the many services Life’s Cycle provides to women from their Ardmore and Norman, Oklahoma, offices.

THE VARIED SOURCES OF PELVIC PAIN

If you come to Life’s Cycle with pelvic pain, Dr. Kimbrough will carefully research your history of pain (such as whether it feels like cramping, if it’s persistent, dull, or worsened by movement, etc.) and your personal and family medical history, and may perform an imaging test to make an accurate diagnosis.

It’s important to investigate pelvic pain and find its root cause, because it has many origins, including:

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (reproductive organ infection, often from sexually transmitted infections)

  • Ovarian cysts (which can be ruptured or twisted)

  • Uterine fibroids (which can create a feeling heaviness or pressure in addition to pain)

  • Pelvic organ prolapse (when a pelvic organ falls down into the vagina)

  • Endometriosis (when the uterine lining grows outside the uterus)

Once Dr. Kimbrough makes an accurate diagnosis, she may recommend laparoscopic surgery as a solution for these and other problems. This type of surgery can also be used as a diagnostic tool, such as confirming endometriosis, or an exploratory option for finding the cause of infertility.

WHAT MAKES LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY A SMART OPTION?

First and foremost, laparoscopic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery that offers you many advantages compared with traditional open surgery, which is much more invasive to your body.

Laparoscopic surgery offers state-of-the-art tools to Dr. Kimbrough. She uses a tiny camera — a laparoscope — which allows her to view your reproductive organs clearly. Inserting the camera  requires only a very small incision.

She makes a few additional smaller incisions for these procedures, and they accommodate minute surgical tools so she can do her work efficiently, with only minor disruption and trauma. This method of surgery also allows for great accuracy during the procedure.

Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery is associated with:

  • Faster healing and recovery

  • Less pain

  • Less bleeding

  • Reduced scarring

  • Lower risk of infection

These procedures are outpatients ones, and some can even be performed right here in our office. Though some surgery still requires a traditional approach, Dr. Kimbrough performs minimally invasive procedures if at all possible.

Another type of minimally invasive surgery we perform here is robotic surgery, where Dr. Kimbrough controls a console with robotic arms connected to surgical instruments. This platform enables her to complete complex tasks and repairs while getting a magnified image of the area being treated. Robotic surgery eliminates the need to access your organs through an opening in your abdomen.
