Laser Therapy Q & A

What is IPL photorejuvenation?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) photorejuvenation is a versatile procedure that consists of multiple pulses of light energy emitted at varying wavelengths. Each pulse lasts a millisecond and works to reverse melasma, brown spots, rosacea, acne scarring, taking years off the skin. IPL is also used to treat unwanted pigmented hair by destroying the hair follicles for permanent hair loss.

What issues can IPL photorejuvenation address?

Photorejuvenation is IPL technology that uses the Lumenis® to correct a variety of benign skin conditions. These include:

  • Sun damage
  • Unwanted hair
  • Rosacea and redness
  • Broken capillaries and visible blood vessels
  • Age spots
  • Melasma
  • Blemishes and mild acne scars

IPL is used to treat all areas of the body. Our staff members are extensively trained, and have years of experience; we can evaluate your aesthetic concerns and help you determine if IPL or another therapy is right for you.

What should I expect during IPL facial treatment?

Prior to IPL treatment, you should avoid the sun for at least six weeks. You also cease use of all Retin-A products for two weeks and stop taking Accutane for two months prior to your session. You will need to be on medical sunscreen regimen along with our skincare regimen.

A cool gel is applied to the treatment areas, and the IPL handpiece is gently applied to your skin to deliver light pulses. The treatment takes about 30 minutes. Expect to feel a snapping, stinging sensation that feels like a small rubber band hitting your skin.

How many IPL sessions will I need?

Usually, three to five sessions are recommended, depending on what you’re having treated and how your skin responds. A comprehensive treatment plan is developed to address your needs.

What is recovery from IPL photorejuvenation like?

You experience swelling, erythema, chocolate chipping in treated areas for 5-7 days following IPL treatment. The dark spots then slough off to leave you with fresh, rejuvenated skin.

You can go back to work immediately following treatment and cover any skin irregularities with makeup. You will see results 7-10 days after your IPL session, as collagen and elastin production accelerates in response to the light energy.

How does IPL for hair removal work?

IPL is effective at destroying hair follicles in areas where you seek permanent hair removal. You can treat areas such as the:

  • Chest and back
  • Arms and legs
  • Bikini area
  • Underarms
  • Chin, upper lip, full face

IPL treatments for hair removal require no downtime afterward.
